FEC scraps the awarding of HND in Nigeria

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) ratified a thorough comprehensive reform of Nigeria higher education which is scrapping the awarding of the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Polytechnics.

Under this newly created rule all non technology based programmes which are being run by Polytechnics would be scraped and the polytechnics will become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellor of those universities appointing Head (provost) for the polytechnics, subject to the decision and acceptance of the Universities, the polytechnics will now be limited to award of the National Diploma (ND) while those that are eager to obtain/further their education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university. As a starter of the new policy Nigeria two prominent polytechnics Kaduna Polytechnic and Yaba College of Technology and will from now on be known as City University of Technology, Kaduna and City University of Technology, Yaba.

The Minister of Education, (Adamu) talked to some journalist after the weekly meeting of the council that under the reform measures, her ministry would, continue to licence colleges of education and private polytechnics for the award of NEC and ND levels, and she also said there will be no award of HND. Note: the scrapping of the Higher National Diploma (HND) is in effect for only the newly admitted one's and those with existing HND will be respected and considered legal tender.
